“You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich.” – Bubba said it best yall.
The annual Amelia Island Shrimp festival. Full of funnel cakes, famously fresh squeezed lemonade, smoked BBQ and of course shrimp at every corner. Oh and the streets are lined with vendors from all over. Bringing artwork big and small. The side streets are lined with antique items and vintage Hawaiian shirts. A live band is playing down at the main stage and everyone and their mother is there. Life is good. Oh and did I mention it is over run by a bunch of PIRATES. I kid you not. These bloody pirates come up to the docks on an actual pirate ship and invade Shrimp Fest. Friendly of course! They pass out beads and candy and are always down for a photo op!
We have a love/hate relationship with it but always end up right smack in the center of it eating every possible thing down there, slurping it down with a lemonade.
We went down at about 10 AM this year and got started. The goal is to see everything but unfortunately you probably won’t.
People from everywhere come visit Amelia Island that weekend and some how – you already know them. That southern small town charm y’all.
The local schools are even out on Friday!
Shrimp Fest is a serious event around here. Our locals prepare for this weekend for months in advance.
The Palace and The Turtle begin to think of their specialty drinks to serve. The palace is serving up a world famous Pirates Punch. And one is about all ya need. Starbucks on the island even serves parrot and pirate head cake pops!
And again the food never ends. (Obviously one of the main reasons I attend) I start at one food booth and eat it before I get to the next.
Alls well that ends well I guess. It’s short but sweet and leaves memories that last a life time and people wanting allll the shrimp salad recipes. (ME!).
Until next year Shrimp Fest. Cheers!
Love, Ashley (Amelia island’s biggest fan)
